Course Title

Literature, Mental illness, and the Self

Course Description

This course offers an overview of literary narratives of the self to better understand how individual selfhood is constructed by a number of cultural, historical, and social forces. Additionally, we will explore the effect of mental illness on the construction of the self and how some “selves” come to be stigmatized. By doing so, we will develop a stronger sense of the self and its relationship to society and the world, and we will better understand how psychological approaches to literature can be used to study the self in ways that foster an awareness of our self in our culture, the self in other cultures, and generate an environment of openness.
